111 million tuned in to Super Bowl XLV

For the second year in a row the Super Bowl has set a TV viewing record of being the most watched event in U.S. TV history, with an estimated 111 million viewers. Over the past couple of years the NFL’s television rating have been getting better, with a 24 percent increase in viewership in the past five years and 13 percent increase in just this past year. Football in general has become more of a communal event, with people wanting to watch the games live, instead of on their DVR, after everyone has told them the score and a few highlights. The super bowl has also brought around new traditions such as waiting for goofs in the national anthem and seeing all of the commercials that companies spent big bucks on. The super bowl viewer ratings equally effect the ratings of the show in the time slot following the game. This year Glee captured 28.6 million of the super bowl viewers by being in that time slot.
