David Wright: [Ownership] Lawsuit will affect Mets

It's one thing for an off-field issue to affect the team it relates to. It is another thing entirely when the face of your franchise admits it will affect the team. That's what has happened to the New York Mets. Principal owner Fred Wilpon, chief operating officer Jeff Wilpon and team president Saul Katz are alleged to have profited off of convicted felon Bernard Madoff's Ponzi scheme. Third baseman David Wright acknowledged publicly that the lawsuit could affect the New York Mets team.

"I don't think that you can sit here and say that it's going to have no effect on the clubhouse when you're talking about kind of the family -- really, the head of the family. "When something is going on with them, of course it's going trickle down. You have to understand that unfortunately there's some great parts about this business and there's some situations like this."

Professional sports franchises cost so much money to purchase that it's a wonder that someone could come up with the money to own a team. Based on this lawsuit, it's possible that owner Fred Wilpon got that money through illegal means. It is also unfortunate to see that the team's hopes to compete may already be sunk before the season even begins.
