The World of College Recruiting

ESPN's Outside the Lines did a great video on the current nature of college football recruiting. With freshman making more of an impact every year and the school making huge profits off those athletes, the recruiting process has become much more competitive. Also, Cam Newton's play-for-play scandal sheds a little light on how bad the process can be to land these potential difference-makers. With national signing day being tomorrow, this video asks the recruits themselves about the current nature of the process.

John Hirko

Ex-Nuggets GM named Knicks consultant

Mark Warkentein, the nuggets former General Manager, had a strong relationship with Carmello Anthony. He has been a top prospect for the top consultant job at the Knicks for months now, and now he has just been hired. When Carmello was interviewed about the new hiring, he was surprised to hear about it and replied with "Did they? Is that surprising? Yeah. As far as I'm concerned, I guess thats a great addition to that organization."

The post reported on Aug 4th that Warkentein could be in line for a Kincks GM job and he had a preliminary interview with walsh in the summer of 2009 for the vacated job that has never been filled.

This seems to be all leading up to a potential move from Denver to New York for Carmello Anthony. There is still a lot of moving parts to this deal and it is also still the middle of the season but there is definately momentum moving towards the New York Knicks acuiring the hard sought after talents of Carmello Anthony.

Salary Cut for Burton Snowboard Company

Keeping it as fair as possible, Burton Snowboard Company has been forced to decrease their employment salaries due to the challenging global economic situation. Lessening their own salaries, owners Jake and Dona Carpenter, choose to decrease those who have a higher yearly income in hopes of eliminating job loss. Also to help the company struggle, Burton has cancelled all bonuses, increases for the North America division, and reducing the company’s 401k match from 4% to 1%.

Although they made a conscious effort, Burton still had to reduce their employee count by 5 %, leaving their overall staff at 663. "This has been a very painful process for us, and considering the global economic situation, we've done everything in our power to save as many jobs as possible," said Burton CEO Laurent Potdevin.

PGA Tour donates $150,000 to flood victims

As Brisbrane, Australia works to recover from the recent devastating floods, the PGA does their part by donating $150,000 to help rebuild homes and community centers. Greg Norman, International captain, is originally from Brisbrane and has witnessed and experienced their powerful floods first hand. He is grateful for all of the support that the PGA has given him and his homeland. Other Australian pro golfers have found ways to pitch in also. Steve Elkington donated $1000 for each birdie he made in his last tournament, resulting in a generous $24,000 towards the flood victims. It is really great when professional sports leagues help out in tragic situations. It not only is positive marketing for the league, but also contributes money to a great cause and those in need.

The best NBA All-Star Game ever?

The talent pool in the NBA has been steadily growing over the past decade and with the all-star game coming we may need a bigger pool. This article talks about this years all-star game and compares it too past all-star games. Although the author (simmons) eventually concluded it may play second fiddle to the 1987 all-star game that pulled out a hall of fame lineup. The NBA this year has been phenomenal and the all-star game looks to be no different. Lets take a look at the teams.

2011 all-star team
PG: Rose versus Paul (battle for the point guard title)
SG: Wade versus Kobe (battle for "Best 2-Guard" status)
SF: LeBron versus Melo ('03 draft retro-rivalry)
PF: Garnett versus Durant (old school versus new school)
C: Howard versus Duncan (new school versus old school)

1987 all-star team
PG: Isiah versus Magic
SG: Jordan versus Blackman
SF: Bird versus Worthy
PF: McHale versus Chambers
C: Moses versus Hakeem

Looking at the all-star team this year I can't imagine one of those guys not in the hall of fame when their careers are over. Dirk is coming off the bench Blake Griffin or Kevin Love may not even make the team this game is deep. This game has potential to be a classic and maybe even the best All-star game ever. With all the story lines and questions coming into the game that may be the last one answered.

US-Egypt soccer match cancelled

Often, we hear sports described as an escape, a shelter from the troubles of the real world. The Olympics was founded on that very premise. But sometimes, reality creeps into the supposed safe haven that is sports. It has happened today, as an upcoming USA vs Egypt soccer match in Cairo, Egypt has been cancelled due to political unrest. The current government is facing the possibility of being overthrown, thus causing chaos in Egypt. Sports has been known to bring together enemies, transcend tragedy, and bring back a sense of normalcy to a troubled nation. However, this time, it will not get that chance.

Urban Meyer joining ESPN as analyst

Urban Meyer is joining the ESPN crew in the college football department. This may come as a surprise to many people because he said he was taking time away from the game to spend time with his family. A job at ESPN can include long hours and alot of time traveling for games and this will take away from his so called family time. Reports also have said that he is still working with UF as a consultant and still maintains an office on campus. What's next for Urban Meyer? You probably won't hear the truth coming straight from him.

NFL's Collective Fumbling

Is an NFL lockout inevitable for 2011-12? The NFL collective bargaining agreement is set to expire on March 4. In a worst-case scenario, the entire 2011-12 campaign would disappear, resulting in millions of dollars in ad revenue lost. Even if no games are actually played the NFL will still collect its rights fees. ESPN, FOX, CBS, NBC, and DirecTV will need to come up with around $4 billion regardless of whether there are any games for them to air. How will networks make up for this loss? What will they air... and will NCAA Football become most watched and more profitable than the NFL this year?

Kevin Garnett: A PR's Nightmare

After yesterday's Lakers/Celtics game, both Yahoo's Marc Spears and ESPN's J.A. Adande Tweeted that when asked for his autograph, Kevin Garnett told a Lakers ball boy, "you've got a better chance of catching Bin Laden."

You'd think after KG's mishap of calling Charlie Villanueva a "cancer patient", that he'd get the point and keep quiet.

Garnett is a great player, but his publicist must be having a hard time falling asleep at night.

KG has a better chance to keep of catch Bin Laden, than he does staying out of trouble.

Lebron Say's He wishes Cleveland the Best

“It didn’t matter for me if the Cavs were going to have a successful season or not,” James said. “I felt like I was making the right choice for me as an individual and for my career. Like I said, I have nothing bad to say about the players that I left and the team. I wish the organization the best. And I wish the fans, more than anything, the best because we had a lot of great years together.”

James was with the Cavaliers for seven seasons, vowing to bring a championship to the title-starved city. Cleveland reached the NBA finals once with James, but never hoisted the trophy, and the Akron native decided last summer to accept significantly less money than the Cavaliers were willing to pay in order to sign a six-year deal with Miami.

I'll have the 2012 and 2016 Euro Cup with a side of UEFA Women's Championship please

Being that soccer is the most popular sport in the world it makes sense that ESPN would try to capitalize on it as best as possible. They demonstrated just how important soccer is to them with their new acquisition of broadcasting rights for the 2012 and 2016 European Championships. They will broadcast every game for both tournaments as well as numerous Euro qualifiers, which will include the home games of Spain, Germany, France and the Netherlands, in addition to games involving England, Italy, Ireland, Scotland and Portugal. Having the rights to these qualifiers is really going to help ESPN build awareness by being able to exploit these early games creating a tremendous amount of hype. They are going to be broadcasting the games on ESPN, ESPN2, ESPN3.com, ESPN Deportes, ESPN Radio and ESPN Mobile.

Last years World Cup taught ESPN just how important mobile broadcasting is due to games being played during the weekday. Scott Guglielmino, ESPN's senior vice president for programming, said that ESPN plans on using digital media extensively, making sure you can be in the know at any given moment. ESPN also acquired the broadcasting rights to the UEFA Women's Championship for 2011,2013,2015,and 2017, which will be televised on ESPN3.com and ESPN Deportes. With the demand for soccer in America growing ESPN is very optimistic that these acquisitions will not only help the sport but bring in a huge amount of cash flow for the sports behemoth.

Dirk Nowitzki to play in Germany during lockout?

With the news that there will most likely be an NBA lock out next year there has been many reports by international NBA star that if there is a lock out they will join there country's basketball team until the lock out ends. The NBA's biggest international player Dirk Nowitzki is considering going to play for Germany. If more stars end up doing this it will give European sports a lot of publicity and strengthen the NBA's fans worldwide. A lot of the NBA organizations are worried that there stars could go overseas to play basketball and in danger there health, however i feel that it would be good for these stars to continue to play basketball if they are not in the NBA. It will be more competitive overseas if a lot of international stars went overseas.

Capital One in Collegiate Sports...

Captial One is a very popular company, especially amongst collegiate sports. Never was there presence felt more than during this years bowl season for football. Captiol one sponsors the entire bowl season, and if you saw at least one bowl game this season, your were fully aware of their presence.

Now, Capitol One has decided to venture into collegiate sports off the field. They partnered up with College Sports Information Directors of America to sponsor collegiate academic All-Americans from all schools that participate in sports.

I feel that this is a very good thing for Capital One. They already make lots of money by sponsoring the bowl games, and now their showing interest in the student-athletes outside of their athletic ability. It is also good that they are promoting both the student and the athlete, not just the athlete.

Tiger Has Lots of Work to Do

Tiger Woods had his worst career finish at Torrey Pines – a place he has won seven times in his career, including his most valiant major championship triumph in the 2008 US Open. Woods had never finished worse than 10th in the Farmers Insurance Open (or any other iteration of it). On Sunday, Woods’ name was on the leaderboard line for T44. That is a shocking position for Woods at a tournament where the Sunday headline used to be pre-written on Monday.

Tiger told reporters he began the week hitting the ball well, then it slowly got worse through the week. Woods struggled with his new mechanics, making moves and hitting positions that were somewhat familiar to prior swings, but getting there in different ways. Woods is trying to match those positions through the bag, he says, which means deviating from the short game touch that allowed him to grind – and even win – without his best stuff.

Top recruit quits Facebook following 'living nightmare'

Everyone is on Facebook ... except one of the nation's top football recruits, who officially logged off the site last week after he blamed it for making his recruiting process "a living nightmare."

In full, here's what Philadelphia (Miss.) High linebacker C.J. Johnson wrote on his Facebook wall just before signing off the site for good.

"This is my last Facebook post and I'm gonna leave facebook with this. Linda Johnson has never worked as a house worker making 100,000 dollars a year and I will not be a Mississippi state bulldog and I'm not considering Mississippi state anymore bc you have constantly comment on my page send me crazy inboxes and has made my recruiting experience a living nightmare. Goodbye facebook."

The potential college star's exit from the social media realm, which was first highlighted by The Clarion-Ledger, has sparked new questions over the role of Facebook, Twitter and other social media in the age of hyper-focused modern college recruiting, where fans have new unfettered access to the stars they desperately hope will choose their school.

The issues of appropriateness and access really become an issue when a teenager changes his mind, adjusting his pledge from one school and picking a rival. That was the case with Johnson, who had committed to Mississippi State, only to de-commit and eventually pick Ole Miss after Mississippi State defensive coordinator Manny Diaz left to take the same position at Texas.

That's when things got out of hand.

"I saw rumors on the Internet with people saying I de-committed from Mississippi State because my momma has been working for this Ole Miss guy and she cleaned his house up for a year and she made $100,000," Johnson told The Clarion-Ledger. "If my momma made $100,000 a year, I wouldn't be driving the truck that I'm driving. I would have had a vehicle a long time ago. It's just the little stuff like that.

"I got a lot of trash talking by both schools on Facebook, but that didn't have a lot to do with it. But when you start getting my mom involved and my family involved, that takes it to a whole another level."

Johnson is one of the highest-profile recruiting victims of Facebook attacks, but he's almost certainly not alone. Unless Facebook, Twitter and their cohorts instill an increased level of privacy -- a trend completely anathema to the very notion of social media -- the attacks will almost certainly get worse for recruits in the future.

Davis, Vick top list of most disliked in sports

Al Davis has been linked to the Oakland Raiders since 1962, first as the coach and general manager, then as an owner. It’s been a largely successful but controversial ride, one that’s included highly publicized spats with the NFL, lawsuits against him from three California cities (Oakland, Los Angeles and Irwindale) as he moved his club up and down the West Coast, and calling out many of his coaches and star players. Davis’ profile has dimmed in recent years, thanks mostly to the Raiders’ futility on the field from 2004 to 2009. E-Poll surveyed more than 1,000 adults on their attitudes toward sports figures currently active as players, coaches, owners or commentators. All were ranked on the combined percentages of respondents who answered “Dislike Somewhat,” “Dislike,” or “Dislike a Lot,” to each sports figure.

Nike helps students

Nike has made a stance that they don't just support the athlete half of a student athlete. The company donated $400,000 to the Penn State library system in honor of Joe Paterno earning his 400th win in his career. Chris Bosh is no tough guy!

According to Kevin Durant anyways....
During the game on Sunday Durant got a technical for exchanging a few words with Chris Bosh. Durant was talking to his team mate, James Harden, and apparently Bosh was unhappy with Durant's advice to dunk on Bosh next time. So of course Bosh has to put his words in and Durant fought back verbally and then they both received technicals. After the game in his interview he had more words for Bosh "I was talking to my teammate and he decided he wanted to put his 2 cents into it. I'm a quiet guy, a laid-back guy, but I'm not going to let nobody talk trash to me. He's on a good team now, so he thinks he can talk a little bit," Durant said.

Some one is on a power trip? and it didn't just stop there. "There's a lot of fake tough guys in this league and he's one of them," Durant added.

The Sportsnation poll next to the story reads "What do you think of Chris Bosh's credentials as a tough guy?"

White wins first WX SuperPipe four-peat

After failing to qualify for the Slopestyle final on Saturday (in his return to that event after a year hiatus), it was fair to ask the question: Was this just not White's year? Then, after his first run in Sunday night's Snowboard SuperPipe final, Shaun White found himself in an unusual position again: second place. However, in Shaun White fashion, on his second run he pulled out all his tricks and nailed it! The run earned him a 97.33 an identical score to his winning run last year in the Olympics and tied for the highest score in Winter X Games history.
Asked how it felt to be back on top after his Slopestyle style set back, White responded, "I knew I wasn't holding the biggest cards, but after living and learning, I was so fired up coming into pipe. I did my thing, and it built me up again."

Cowboys still own 'America's Team' title'

This is a popularity contest, plain and simple.

It's not about victories and virtues. The subject of debate is which NFL team most captures the country's fascination.

That's the Dallas Cowboys. That is clear, judging by tangible measures of popularity such as television ratings and franchise values.

You could consider the Cowboys to be the NFL's prom queens. "America's Team" just sounds better.

The Cowboys' popularity probably spiked during their '90s dynasty. However, it's still going strong a decade and a half later despite only one playoff win in the last 14 seasons.

It's been a long time since the Cowboys lifted a Lombardi Trophy, but the "America's Team" crown still fits fine.

Some proof:
1. According to Forbes, the Cowboys are the nation's most valuable sports franchise. The magazine reported the franchise's value to be $1.65 billion, ranking behind only soccer institution Manchester United in the world.

2. According to an NFL release, the most-watched television program of the fall was the Cowboys' Thanksgiving Day loss to the New Orleans Saints, which had an audience of 31.9 million viewers. The Cowboys' Dec. 12 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles had the highest audience ever for a Sunday night game (25.73 million viewers). And those two games came with the Cowboys, who always get the maximum number of prime-time games allowed by league rules, well out of playoff contention.

3. The Harris Poll determined that the Cowboys were the most popular NFL team among American sports fans the past four years. The Rooney family reportedly declined a version of the "America's Team" nickname when NFL Films wanted to give it to the Steelers in the 1970s. They were proud to be Pittsburgh's team

Packer Problems

During this past week the Green Bay Packers have created their own controversy because of their team picture. The problem all started when the Packers planned to take a team photo without the players who were placed on injured reserve. This bothered Tight End Jermichael Finley and Linebacker Nick Barnett and they went to twitter with the issue. This created a little back and forth between Aaron Rodgers and Barnett. In my opinion they should have been included in the picture because they contributed to the team and may have been the difference in them making the playoffs. My problem is the way they handled it. They should have gone to the team captains privately to not create a distraction for the team. In the end the team rescheduled to include the injured players. On Super Bowl Media Day expect to hear a lot of questions on this subject.

Social Media Attack dooms Cutler

When the Chicago Bears played the Green Bay Packers many were unsure how to handle the fact that quarterback Jay Cutler sat out the entire second half of the game. Battling the pain of a sprained MCL Cutler had a tough decision to make. It appeared that he was in so much pain that he even had tears in his eyes. Its hard for a fan to relate because a fan probably doesn't know what it feels like to play football with such an injury.
Jay Cutler soon was able to see how many other athletes felt about the quarterbacks decision to sit out the entire half of an extremely important game. Many athletes tweeted their feelings to Cutler and most didn't agree with his decision. Athletes were stating that they could of played on this type of injury as well as reminding him the importance of the game he was playing. Darnell Dockett stated that "in the playoffs you must drag me off the field."

Pro Bowl Can't-Miss Play: Return of the Mack

This isn't so much me breaking down an article as much as its just giving credit where credit is due. The major issue in why it is hard to market the Pro Bowl is because no body cares. The players can say they love being competitive but we all watch the first 5 minutes of the first quarter and watch players barely get out of their stances. Alex Mack, however, gets a once in a lifetime chance and seizes it. After he straightens out Roman Harper he dives in for the score... Not as good as the BJ Raji dance but congrats Alex.

Sometimes Garnetts Talent Is Overshadowed By Stupidity

Kevin Garnett is one of the best players in NBA history. He's a physical, tough player who any fan would love to have on their team. However, sometimes Garnetts abilities are overshadowed by his stupidity. Example A was earlier this year when he reportedly called Charlie Villanueva a "cancer patient." Example B occurred this past Friday. Garnett was ejected from Fridays game against the Phoenix Suns for hitting Channing Frye below the belt while he attempted a three point shot. I don't care how the media or the announcers tried to spin it, because I watched it live. Garnett was late getting to the perimeter to defend the shot, so his solution was to hit Frye between the legs. As I said Garnett is one of the best players in NBA history, but sometimes he needs a reality check. The fact that he even tried arguing his ejection is a joke. Grow up KG, you can't argue with the video tape.

Eagles franchise tag Vick

The Eagles franchise tag Michael Vick in order to retain him as their quarterback. Vick would make an estimated $20 million next season provided there is no lockout. Vick is well-known for his fall from grace, and this season's rise from that fall. He led the Eagles to a 10-7 season and was selected to the Pro Bowl. This puts backup quarterback Kevin Kolb in a pickle. The Eagles will likely look to trade Kolb to gain value. Unfortunately Kolb cannot be traded until there is a new collective bargaining agreement.

Hospital wrapping babies in Terrible Towels

A hospital in Mt. Lebanon, Pa. is wrapping each newborn in a Terrible Towel as part of a celebration of the Steelers playing in Super Bowl XLV.
St. Clair Hospital started the tradition when the Steelers last made it to the Super Bowl in 2008 and decided to continue this year.

The Schoolyard All Over Again

As the previous blog mentioned, the NHL All-Star Game tried to create buzz by instituting a draft as you would see before a dodge-ball game. The best part? Waiting to see who went last.

This year, it was Phil Kessel, who received a good amount of ribbing from Toronto teammates about being picked last. But it didn't come without consolation. Phil received a brand new Honda CR-X (a nice little plug for Honda, who has a sponsorship deal with the NHL) and a $20,000 donation to the charity of his choice under his name.

Seems like a pretty good deal. It does suck for the player picked second to last (Paul Stasny of the Colorado Avalanche), who would walk home empty handed. (As much as a pro athlete would, at least.)

So what do you think of all this flash around the NHL ASG? Personally, I heard more people talking about this game than the Pro Bowl, which I personally found boring.

Team Lidstrom outguns Team Staal as Loui Eriksson seals All-Star win

http://proxy.espn.go.com/nhl/recap?gameId=310130073

"Unfazed by having to pick second in the inaugural NHL All-Star fantasy draft, the Detroit Red Wings' defenseman built and went on to lead another winning team -- though this was the first one named after him."

The NHL did a pretty good job of marketing this years All Star game. In an unprecedented fashion this year the NHL decided to have a Fantasy Draft with all of the players that were selected to the AllStar game. I thought that this was a genius idea especially since fantasy Sports has become such a big thing these days among sports fans. Not only did the draft itself do a good job of marketing for the All Star game, but it also gave the fans something to watch as most people were very interested to see who was picked 1st as well as who was the last person picked in the draft. I would like to see other sports like basketball and baseball pick up a similar trend as I thought the test run on the fantasy NHL game was a success.

O.J. Mayo claims "energy drink"

O.J. Mayo is currently on a 10-game suspension because he tested positive for a DHEA, a substance on the NBA's banned list of performance enhancing drugs. His response, it was an energy drink he bought from a local gas station. He was suspended this past Friday and will return on February 15. This suspension was the end of rough time for Mayo, this season he lost his starting position, fought with a team mate and dealt with tough family issues. He understands that players must be responsible for their actions which includes what they put in their bodies but he still claims innocence. Former Magic player, Rashard Lewis, has a similar issue last season. He said it's pretty much impossible for a player to keep up with everything that is on that list and items on the list are even in cough medicine. Mayo was only being tested because they were suspicious of his first sample taken in November so they called him to inform him they would be testing his alternative sample from the day and this led to his suspension.

Kevin Garnett's 'Beat L.A.' shoe

http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/blog/ball_dont_lie/post/Kevin-Garnett-s-Beat-L-A-shoe?urn=nba-313525

It's usually below Kevin Garnett(notes) to taunt an opponent.

Actually, no it's not. KG is known for rubbing it in the face of all manner of opponents. Postgame, sure, he'll be the first guy to offer you a handshake, win or lose, but during the game? All bets are off. Especially if you happen to be a 6-2 point guard who wasn't born in the continental United States.

So when word leaked out that KG was planning to wear a stylized ANTA-brand shoe that threw Boston's all-time record (152-120, as pictured above) against the Los Angeles Lakers, in a game against the Los Angeles Lakers? Well, it's pretty typical.

And it's pretty cool. Kudos to KG for putting himself out there, like that, especially as Sunday's hyped-up contest against the defending champs is in Los Angeles. If the 2004 MVP has a less than stellar time out, he's going to be on the hook.

The Rise of UCF

Before getting accepted into UCF I didn't know much about the school. Lacking school history and powerhouse sports programs, it made sense. In my time at this school I have seen an incredible transformation. As a freshmen, you would see more UM, FSU, and and UF hats, shirts, and shorts worn by students on campus than UCF clothes. This year though, things seem to be different. Rather than being fans of other schools, a great number of students here actually seem proud to be a UCF Knight. A major reason is the recent success in sports. Both our football and basketball teams were ranked for the first time in school history. I always questioned why our programs took so long to take off. USF built their football program out of a portable and were quickly ranked #2 in the nation. Friends in Gainesville were fortunate enough to win a championship in both basketball and football (2 of each) which is unbelievable. Seeing our programs get built in my years here has been a great thing to watch. Rather than finding hidden gems in high school, we are stealing top recruits from big name schools left and right. Many Knights are happy with all we have done but I know there is a lot in store for us in the future.

AL Golden Bring Back The Buzz About The U

With the end of the Sun Bowl came the beginning of head coach Al Golden’s reign at the helm of the University of Miami football program. In the 20 days since Golden took over, there has been quite a buzz around the team, one that wasn’t seen too often under former coach Randy Shannon.

Over the past four years, both fans and media were quick to mention just how reserved the program was. Press statements seemed too rehearsed, interviews hardly answered questions and interaction between the team and the fans was at a low point. It eventually reached a point where Shannon even banned his players from having a Twitter account.

Now, not only are some players back on Twitter, but Golden and his coaching staff have embraced the media platform as well, posting updates on coaching changes and interacting with their followers.

“Al Golden is a pretty media savvy guy; he handles himself well,” said Brian Dzenis of the Temple News, the weekly independent newspaper. “He is an intimidating guy, but he has this salesman vibe to him where he wants you to believe in him, his program.”

New York Jets' Antonio Cromartie rips NFL, union over CBA talks

The NFL has been talking about the end of the CBA on March 4 for a long time. The problem is that they are not really doing anything about it; its a lot of talk and no action. Cromartie, the Jets cornerback was explicitly calling out the NFL and their lack of efforts this morning. He is actually a free agent but he can't start talking about offers right now because everyone is skeptical of the future of the CBA. On the other hand, the Jets coach has challenged his players to continue to workout over the summer and keep an eye on each other. Last year they had 100% attendance at summer workouts and he expects this summer to be no different. The players understand the importance of continuing to work out even though they don't know their future. Ultimately, Cromartie was telling the NFL that they need to stop worrying about the money aspect and figure something out because a potential lockout puts a lot of peoples careers on the line, not just the players.

Quitters Never Win

In the ultimate display of selfishness, West Virginia basketball player Danny Johnson got off the bench and walked away during the second half of their game on Sunday. He was a bench player not getting many minutes and he probably won't be getting more any time soon. After the game his coach, Bob Huggins, said it was "unexcused, inexcusible. Never to be seen again, I guess."

Playing Division I basketball and earning a free ride through college is a priveldge that very, very few people get to enjoy. Plus all of the practices, meetings, scrimmages and games the entire team has to go through; Danny Johnson had a real commitment to the University, his teammates and the fans. Even if he was a bench player, they offered to bring him in and be a part of the team. The fact that he threw it all away speaks volumes about what kind of person he is and is the living proof of the phrase, quitters never win.

Kim K does it again

Kim Kardashian has found fame along with fortune for her physique. The photo shows Kim attending her current boyfriend Kris Humphrie's basketball game. The photo also shows two fans taking a look at Kim's backside.

Why is she so famous, and making a no name NBA player like Kris Humphries, relevant? I don't think I will ever understands the worlds fascination with the Kardasian clan. What I am perplexed about is the fact that Kim blogged and told her readers not to idealize the girls from MTV's teen mom 2. Should they idealize her? An attractive female who has now made millions of her fame from sleeping with black entertainers.

Sports and the Kardasian clan have become synonymous. To me, they are just a group of upscale groupies.

11 New Uniforms for 2011-2012 NHL Season

A leak from the 2011 Reebok planning catalog shows that 11 NHL franchises are planning on introducing new uniforms for the upcoming season. Some of these include the New York Rangers, Los Angeles Kings, Tampa Bay Lightning and Florida Panthers. This comes only a few seasons after the RBK Edge jerseys were introduced in the first place, which was a drastic change for most all the franchises in the NHL. Is this just a marketing ploy to sell more jerseys, or a genuine initiative to revive a franchises' image? It depends on the franchise, but either way, take a look at some of these ideas and plans over at Icethetics:

Super Bowl Ad Time Line I-XLIV

In 1967, when Kansas City and Green Bay played in the first Super Bowl ever a :30 commercial cost $37,500... 44 years later you would be lucky to get the same ad space for $3 million. Brands were skeptical to buy such expensive slots in the early years, but the ones that did saw the rewards. People now tune in just to see what spectacular commercials are going to be displayed by the top world's most well known brands. I believe the Super Bowl is America's biggest media display every year and this year 100+ million are expected to tune in. In just four short hours history is made. My grandparents still talk about the mean Joe Greene and Joe Namath commercials. What commercials and brands will we remember and retell to our children?

Softball Players Choose Pro League Over Team USA

Last week, some of our nation’s top female athletes made the tough decision to turn down the opportunity to play for the U.S. National Softball team. Softball will not be included in the 2012 Olympic Games and many of the girls believe that playing in the National Pro Fastpitch (NPF) league here in the US, instead of playing internationally for Team USA, would result in greater growth of the sport and would also offer a higher level of competition. With almost every member of the 2008 Team USA roster choosing to play in the NPF, the league is hoping to gain much more exposure than it has in past years. Olympic gold medalist Jessica Mendoza not only now plays in the NPF but is also an ESPN analyst during the NCAA Women’s College World Series. The playoff games had over 800,000 viewers. Mendoza has been attempting to get ESPN coverage for some NPF games this summer.

I think that this is a smart move for these players. Taking into consideration that they will not be competing in the 2012 games, I think it is crucial to focus on building up the game of softball here in the US instead of competing in different countries around the world. The professional league will now have the best players in the United States as well as some of the top players coming directly out of college. Since this league will be the only place to see former Olympians and former college standouts, I think that the fans of Team USA and the widely popular College World Series will now become followers of the NPF. Hopefully the choice to build up the professional league will not only offer wider exposure of the game of softball but also change the view of women’s sports and the level of competition they can reach.

U.S. Open Left in the Rain as Competitors Look for Cover

With the advent of the Australian Open upon the sports world, the questions looms. What is the U.S. Open going to do about the Arther Ashe Stadium in New York? The past 3 years rain has interfered with the singles finals and has accounted for the tournament's three worst television ratings since 1992. They need to figure somthing out before they loose all there TV sponsorships which partially accounts for $200 million in revenue each . New York is going to be fine either way boasting $420 million of generated revenue from this two week event.

The U.S. Open has asked New York for a considerable amount of money to renovate and build a retractible roof over the Arther Ashe Stadium. The only problem with this is that, in order to put a roof on it you need to shell out a cool 225 mil. Due to the foundation on which the stadium sits being extremely soft, they would need to build a completely seperate entity for the roof to sit on. Which would also need to be drilled 200 feet deep into the nearest bedrock for support. The U.S. Open has an "estimate" of what this is going to cost New York in total, and they came up with $450 million for everything. This "estimate" is not that bad considering you get the highest-attended annual sporting event in the world.

There dependency upon each other leaves the U.S. Open and New York in a difficult spot, which is going take some creative funding and thinking to fix. We are going to have to wait and see what happens, but my guess is the U.S. Open isn't moving for a long time.

Stafon Johnson files suit against USC

A former University of Southern California running back files a lawsuit against the school Monday. Back in 2009, during a mandatory team workout one afternoon, Stafon Johnson had an accident in which the bench press bar holding 275 lbs slipped and fell onto his neck almost causing him to die. According to his lawyer, a number of other injuries occured due to this incident. The player and his family are sueing the school and former coach, Jamie Yanchar, for medical related expenses, pain and suffering, and loss of future earnings. Johnson says Yanchar was not paying close enough attention and that the accident could have been prevented if he was not distracted by other players. I believe the school should continue to fight the charges because this all happened over a year ago and is just now being brought up. There is no proof that Johnson would have gone pro, so he can not claim that they affected future earnings. It is unfortunate that this occured, but I do not believe it was in any way the coach's fault and that Johnson is being greedy.

Bambi & Athletes equal true love

Ok, so not actually Bambi but some of his relatives seem to be in the headlines when it comes to athletes and HGH. It turns out that the New Zealand Red Velvet Deer has some very sought after antlers. They possess a very special coating that covers their antlers. This substance is harvested from the deer when their antlers are cut, which causes no pain to the deer. After the antlers are cut they are then frozen and then crushed to form pills or a simple oral spray that can sell for $68.

So why all this trouble for some deer antlers? It turns out that they contain IGF-1 (insulin growth factor 1) which is one of the proteins that is increased in HGH, which is considered performance enhancing. So one of mother nature's tricks, is that these antlers are only detectable through blood test which is not currently in place in the NFL & MLB. Bengals safety Roy Williams admits he used the spray 2-3 times a day and it never showed up on the NFL's urine test. Some of the benefits he received were faster recovery time and increased muscle growth. There have been other NFL players and coaches linked to these famous antlers such as Ray Lewis & new Raiders coach Hue Jackson, but who knows what Al Davis does out there in Oakland.

What I found interesting about this article is how the media's percpetion of the sport decides if we vilify or idolize an athlete. For instance, it seems that if NFL athletes get caught taking a performance enhacing substance they get a pass in the media because of the sports violent nature. However, if a MLB player gets caught taking the same substance they have cheated the game and have ruined all the history and lore of America's past-time. If it turns out that Ray Lewis was using this substance as well as many of his other NFL'ers, how are they different than say Barry Bonds or Alex Rodriguez. I say the only difference is in the media's coverage and portrayal of the story.

Travis Pastrana goes NASCAR

NASCAR goes extreme! Travis Pastrana decided to partner with long time NASCAR driver, Michael Waltrip, taking his career once again to the next level. Travis is planning on attending the NASCAR Nationwide Series in Indianapolis and the X Games in Los Angeles, all in a summer’s time. Right now his focus is on mastering a 720 at the Moto X Best Trick, a trick never landed in competition.

Pastrana is taking on new responsibilities partnering with Waltrip. Typically drivers are asked not to do what Travis does everyday… bungee jumping, cliff-jumping, things of that nature. His main concern with entering the new sport is the hype for what could be a disaster. He states, “ Honestly, it’s about getting in there and trying to do the best we can, and earning the respect of these other guys. You need the other guys to work with you. NASCAR is a team sport even if they’re not on your team.”

The Kangaroo is to Blame

"Wozniaki plays kangaroo joke on media"
I was waiting for my class to start today and on the TV I saw this headline and I thought to my self, what the heck could she have told them. Well...I continued watching the story and this is what I found out.

"
Tennis star Caroline Wozniacki got another one back on the media that dubbed her "boring" on Sunday by leading them to believe she had been the victim of a kangaroo attack in the lead up to her fourth round win over Latvian Anastasija Sevastova at the Australian Open."

Talk about sweet sweet revenge. I think it is absolutely hilarious that she got back at the media but making up a crazy story of a kangaroo attacking her. I probably would have done something too if someone called me boring. Not only is the media making accusations about athletes personalities but now they themselves are being victims of media. Wozniacki later tweeted about the story "Round 2 with the media: (hope you enjoyed my kangaroo story, hope you know i was just kidding:) see you on tuesday for round 3!," Yes of course, she tweeted about it. Got to love twitter.

Pack's Capers dials one up at just the right time

I picked this article because I need to express my feelings towards a sportswriter known as Pete Prisco who writes for CBS Sports. I have read many articles that have come from this man and a lot of the time I feel he has no idea what he is talking about. In this article he is talking about the play calling of Green Bay Packers Defensive Coordinator, Dom Capers. He talks about how the play calling of the zone blitz ,in which lead to the interception of the ball for a score by BJ Raji, was a risky play. It may of been Dom Capers first time calling that play, however the play was not as dangerous as Prisco makes it seems. Prisco makes the event seem like it was a bigger deal than it actually was. It was a big play but it was not an onside kick at the beginning of the half in which if failed would of changed the outcome of the game. I just do not think Prisco is that good of a writer and wanted to put that out there.

TNT NBA Crew to Handle 2011 NCAA Tournament Coverage

The pinnacle of the college basketball season will have a distinctly NBA feel in the broadcast booth and in the studio. Turner Sports NBA broadcasters Ernie Johnson, Kenny Smith, Charles Barkley, Marv Albert, Steve Kerr, Kevin Harlan, Reggie Miller, Craig Sager, David Aldridge, Marty Snider and Matt Winer will cover the 2011 NCAA Tournament for CBS and Turner Sports, it was announced Thursday. Kerr will call the Final Four alongside CBS broadcasters Jim Nantz and Clark Kellogg, in addition to early round games with Albert. Harlan, the only member of the TNT NBA crew who also regularly works for CBS, will call games with NBA partner Miller and CBS' Dan Bonner. In the studio, Johnson will alternate hosting coverage with Greg Gumbel from CBS studios in New York. Smith, Barkley and Greg Anthony will serve as analysts. Anthony works for CBS full time, but also has a guest analyst role on Turner's NBA TV. Matt Winer will host coverage from Turner's Atlanta studios with CBS' Seth Davis and NBA TV's Steve Smith. On the sidelines, Sager, Aldridge and Snider will be joined by CBS' Lesley Visser, Sam Ryan and Tracy Wolfson. Wolfson will be part of the broadcast team for the Final Four. ESPN announcer Jay Bilas will no longer be part of CBS NCAA Tournament coverage. Fellow ESPN colleague Len Elmore, however, will call games alongside popular play-by-play voice Gus Johnson. Other broadcast teams include Verne Lundquist and Bill Raftery, Ian Eagle and Jim Spanarkel, Tim Brando and Mike Gminski, and Spero Dedes and Bob Wenzel. The use of broadcasters so associated with the NBA could cause some consternation for college basketball viewers. While there is some overlap, the NBA and NCAA attract significantly different audiences.

NBA Game Promises to Be a Turkey? Call In the Turks - or the Filipinos

It's that time of year in the NBA: the deep winter slog when teams with losing records search far and wide for gimmicks to fill seats. That's why many teams are drumming up "Heritage" events, meant to court even the smallest émigré enclaves to NBA courts, and provide just a tad of buzz—and a souvenir trinket or two—to pump up attendance.

The Toronto Raptors have Filipino Night set for early next month, arriving on the heels of Serbian, Jewish and Chinese nights in January.

The Minnesota Timberwolves are hosting both an Israeli Heritage and a Jewish Heritage event, with a Canadian Heritage Night teed up for late January and a German Heritage night for March.

The Golden State Warriors' Latino Night is on Jan. 28, after the team held events saluting fans from Iran and China.

Heritage events became popular in the U.S. about a decade ago, when the NBA began signing more talent from overseas. Currently, there are 86 foreign-born players in the NBA.

Pitching ethnicity is an easy win for clubs that don't typically draw big crowds. With 41 games on a team's home schedule, most won't sell out. Weak opposing teams can further dash hopes for a strong turnout. But by focusing on visiting ethnic players, heritage events can generate interest, raising the odds of higher ticket sales. With the right plans—such as special foods and autograph signings with the star player—some teams say they can fill as many as 2,000 additional seats.

But heritage events can be tricky. Many NBA rosters aren't intact long enough to justify an ethnic night based on a particular athlete—thus, for example, creating Turkish events without a Turkish player.

Super Bowl Line

After the conference championship games took place Vegas decided to make the line as Packers favored by 2 1/2 points. I think this line is too high and if anything the Steelers should be the team favored because they have been their before. In my opinion the Steelers are a more complete team and also it usually seems as if the AFC has the tougher teams. I think the reason why Vegas made the Packers favored by 2 1/2 is because they are probably the fan favorite and their expecting a lot bets to come in on the Green Bay side. Their the kind of team fans root for because they were a sixth seed and they have an exciting passing offense. We'll see on February 6th how close Las Vegas came to the real spread.

A Man Of His Word

A group of friends in a fantasy football league decided to increase the stakes for this past season. Instead of paying money to be in the league, all owners involved had to sign a contract saying that the owner who finished in last place would get a tattoo designed by the owner who finished in first place. As a person who loves tattoos, I think this idea is absolutely awesome (probably because I'm not the one stuck with a stupid tattoo). The loser got a tattoo of a pink unicorn with the words "Fantasy Loser" underneath it. His only problem with that tattoo? "For the rest of my life, I'm going to look down at the tattoo and say, I should've drafted Vick."

Oklahoma Sooners looking to launch their own TV channel

Just a day after the University of Texas and ESPN announced a 20-year, $300 million agreement for the a TV network to provide exclusive University of Texas content on a new channel, Oklahoma announced its plans to launch a network of their own sometime in 2011. The model for an Oklahoma channel would not be through a major network, like ESPN, but would be a channel all of their own. The programming would be very similar to that of the University of Texas channel but of course with Oklahoma Sooners programing. This goes to show fans that colleges are always completing with eachother, on and off the field.

Jay Cutler Injury Reactions

Everyone in the world would be more than upset to find out they tore their MCL.

Not Jay Cutler.

Cutler injured his left knee in the first half of Sunday's NFC title game against Green Bay and left for good after the first series of the third quarter. He was replaced by Todd Collins, who was replaced by Caleb Hanie in the Bears' 21-14 loss.

Cutler received a lot of criticism for exiting the game. Maurice Jones Drew tweeted, "Hey I think the urban meyer rule is effect right now... When the going gets tough........QUIT.." Deion Sanders also said, "Folks i never question a players injury but i do question a players heart".

Do you think Jay Cutler really tore his MCL or were the Chicago Bears public relations crew in full effect Monday morning?

Either way, I don't think anyone will be going to Jay Cutler's Super Bowl party this year. Except for maybe... Steve Bartman.

Brian Urlacher defends Jay Cutler

This article is basically what the title explains. Brian Urlacher, whether he agreed with Cutlers decision to not play or not, went on the podium and backed his quarterback. This to me shows at teammates should handle the press; keep issues like this in house. He didn't go up there and blast Cutler like Hines Ward did to Ben Roethlisberger, he stuck up for his teammate. There are way to many players out there that play for themselves these days and not for the team. While I agree that Cutler seemed healthy to play for a chance to go to the Superbowl, I like the way Urlacher handled the media.

Jay Cutler, tough leader with a significant injury or soft malcontent with a slightly bum wheel? That's the question being bandied about in the aftermath of Chicago's defeat at the hands of Green Bay in the NFC Championship. The Chicago defense kept it close in the 21-14 loss, and a third-string quarterback, the undrafted Caleb Hanie from Colorado State, directed a pair of scoring drives that left us pondering ... UCF's slump continues with 58-50 loss to Rice

UCF didn't wake up in time to snap out of its brutal slump.

The Knights trailed Rice 27-25 at the half, but a 12:01 field-goal drought torpedoed UCF's shot at a win.

The Owls (9-10 overall, 1-4 in Conference USA) slipped past the Knights (14-4 overall, 1-4 in C-USA) by a score of 57-50 in front of rowdy announced crowd of 9,347 at UCF Arena Saturday night, extending UCF's losing streak to four games

"Our guys have got to find a way to overcome adversity and we haven't," UCF coach Donnie Jones said, later promising to make changes to his starting lineup. "Our team's playing very tight. We've tried as coaches to loosen them up. There comes a time when you have to step up."

The Rubio Dilemma Deepens For Wolves

"With the Fifth pick of the 2009 NBA the Minnesota Timberwolves select Ricky Rubio".

The Wolves would then take another point guard with the sixth pick overall (Johnny Flynn) and leave the likes of Stephen Curry, Ty Lawson, Jordan Hill, Brandon Jennings, and Darren Collison on the board for other teams to draft. That is where the problem began, its hard to draft in the NBA and every team makes mistakes but the Timberwolves mistake has just been magnified and this article explains why.

Someone close to Ricky Rubio is talking to the media and telling them what fans and the Minnesota organization don't want to hear. Rubio is not interested in joining the Timberwolves anytime soon if at all. To everyone surprise Ricky is only interested in joining good teams, that being the Heat, Knicks or Celtics.

The article also has some interesting information about the play of Rubio as of late and its not good news for any teams in the NBA or his current team. Ricky's shooting percent is declining along with his scoring and his value overall to the Timberwolves.

I am not surprised by this article since it seems like every "star" in the NBA wants to leave his team. I think Rubio was an awful draft pick and has set Minnesota back a few years along with the fact that Johnny Flynn isn't thriving in his 2nd year after coming back from an injury. The Timberwolves have a decent young core but all signs look to more rebuilding after reading this article. They are a shoe in for a high draft pick after this season, lets just hope they draft someone who wants to play in the NBA.

Mayne Event: Trash Talk

Rex Ryan changed up his game preparation for the Steelers. Instead of "making it personal" like he did with Peyton Manning and Tom Brady, Ryan talks of respect towards Steelers coach Mike Tomlin and quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. Kenny Mayne takes up the mantle and tries to stir up more trash talking between the Steelers and the Jets. I see it as Kenny Mayne making fun of the media because the media loves to stir up trash talking to make for a better story.

NFL asks Toyota to remove clip of helmet-to-helmet hit from ad

How powerful is the NFL? It can compel the world's largest automaker to change a commercial simply because it doesn't like it.

The league asked Toyota to remove a clip of a helmet-to-helmet hit from a television advertisement late last year or have it banned from airing during the league's broadcasts, according to a report by Reuters. The Japanese company took out the segment but refused to pull the spot entirely. This despite the fact that the NFL was never referenced in the commercial and the clip in question involved generic high school football players.

Travis Pastrana announces NASCAR debut

Travis Pastrana, widely known for rally car racing and motocross, has announced his debut in NASCAR. Travis will join the NASCAR Nation Wide Series for seven races this summer. His first race will be on July 30 in Indianappolis. However, he also said he will be competing in X Games 16 in Los Angeles, from July 29 to August 1.

His plan is to compete in Moto X Best Trick, where he'll try to land his long sought 720, then fly to Indianapolis in time to qualify and race in his much-anticipated NASCAR debut before again heading west to drive in the Rally Cross competition at X Games the following day.

"It's really ridiculous. And depending on how it goes, it has the opportunity to be the best week of my life, or possibly the worst," he said.

This is a crazy idea to try and do X Games at the same time as NASCAR. However, I think this will be very good for NASCAR. Pastrana, is a popular and very eccentric athlete who has many fans that will most likely tune in to watch his NASCAR debut. Pastrana coming to NASCAR will create a lot of buzz and perhaps Pastrana's energy will bring new life to NASCAR, something they desperately need.

Homeless man is the king of fantasy football

Three million people competed at fantasy football on ESPN.com this year. One man managed to rise above all of them, and he did it despite not having a computer. Or a place to live.

Steve Kerr addresses the NCAA tournament's TV makeover

New partners CBS and Turner Sports unveiled their lineup of announcers for the NCAA tournament on Thursday, sparking questions regarding how TNT's NBA-centric analysts will fare calling college games for the first time.

To address that topic, I spoke with TNT's Steve Kerr, who will team with Marv Albert for the first two weeks of the tournament before joining joining Jim Nantz and Clark Kellogg in the Final Four booth.

Kerr, who helped lead Arizona to the Final Four in 1988, said he's "fired up" to return to his college roots. The former Chicago Bulls guard and Phoenix Suns general manager spoke about how he's preparing for his new gig, what the biggest challenges will be and why he expects plenty of surprises in this year's NCAA tournament.

ESPN To Kick Off University Of Texas Network

"ESPN, going deep into the heart of the Lone Star State, will kick off a dedicated University of Texas network next September.
The 24-hour, still unnamed service, will be located in Austin, the result of a 20-year agreement with the University of Texas, the sports programmer and multimedia rights-holder IMG College, which negotiated the deal for the school.
The Texas channel will offer a variety of content, highlighted by more than 200 exclusive events annually from numerous sports, original series and studio shows, historical programming and academic and cultural happenings.Additionally, ESPN said there will be an online broadband companion to the TV network that will present extensive content, particularly events not featured on the linear TV network due to simultaneous events or other overlapping programming.Sports Business Journal estimates the value of the deal at some $300 million, with the programmer committing some $400 million in production over the life of the pact."

This is a huge deal that a university was able to pull of a deal of this magnitude. I would have thought it would have been a professional team (such as Jerry Jones and his Cowboys) to be the first team to pull something off like this. I guess thinking back though it does make sense because a University has alot more sports and events that it can cover on a more consistent basis.

This deal could be the beginning to a transformation of how big time universities get covered. History in the making.
