To Pack a Stadium, Provide Video Better Than TV

It is becoming harder and harder to get fans to get off their couches and away from their HD, or 3D televisions and to a sporting venue. Stadiums are now being built to try and compete with this new era of technology. The Amway Arena, Meadowlands Stadium, and Cowboys Stadium have spent billions in hopes of attracting those in search of the ultimate fan experience.

The New Meadowlands Stadium offers fans free smart-phone applications that they can glance at to see video replays, updated statistics and live video from other games — and that will work only inside a stadium. There are also applications that provide fans with statistics on the speed of players and the ball, and fantasy games that will allow them to pick players and compete against other fans. About $100 million has been spent on the stadium’s technology, and a former television production executive was hired to oversee the fan experience to offer more than fans can get sitting at home on their couches in front of their high-definition television sets. With NFL game attendance down teams will now have to go to great lengths to create a competitive advantage. It is still debatable whether there will be a positive return on investment, but it definitely sets the stage for a new era of sporting events.
