When most people think of a general manager of a sports team, they often think of the person who controls the roster; controlling the fate of who joins the team and who is let go. But it turns out that Yankees GM Brian Cashman does not have the final say on his team's roster after all. In this article, Cashman explains that he did not support the signing of relief pitcher Rafael Soriano, for a variety of reasons. He states that he was trying to keep the Yankees 200 million dollar payroll flexible, and did not feel that signing Soriano did that. He also did not want to give up the Yankees' first round draft pick, a requirement to sign a top-flight free agent such as Soriano. Despite his concerns, Hal Steinbrenner, son of the late George Steinbrenner, decided that signing Soriano was in the best interest of the club, and the deal was made. Cashman believes that his power as GM has not been infringed upon, but given the dust-ups that have occured between him and former owner George Steinbrenner, one has to wonder if that is truly the case.
